Victoria Day

The May Long Weekend
found us in Alexandra Park
in Vancouver's West End.
It was a beautiful, sunny,
breezy day and we enjoyed
ourselves immensely.

We had a wonderful tea
of cucumber and watercress
sandwiches, scones with
preserves and clotted cream.

A rousing game of
croquet or tennis awaited
us after our repast

Croquet was enjoyed by all and pretty much fell into a free-for-all, where no one felt much like waiting their turn to play.

Badminton was also on the afternoon's schedule. How do the ladies do it, with those long skirts?

Whoever thought of playing
croquet in a long skirt must
have been royalty...who else
would have had servants to
hold the skirts in place -
especially on windy days
such as this.

As staunch Victorians, belief in Spiritualism was a must, therefore tea leaf reading was also one of our many events.

Our formal group portrait.
A more 'timely' photograph would have had none of us smiling but who could resist on such a fun day. We had a woman who came up to us to tell us how much our little picnic took her back to her days as a child in Ontario and the Victoria Day parades, picnics, races etc that would take place.
The highlight of the entire day was an interview from CBC radio.

To hear it please click here for part 1   part 2   part 3   part 4 It's not so clear at first, but it gives you a chance to hear our moment of glory. It is about four minutes long. When asked, choose "Save this file...". You have to save the sound file to your computer.Choose your desktop so it is easy to find. Once it has downloaded, double click it and it should play. The files are each about 3 MB and on a 56k modem hookup they may take a while to download. In the meantime, browse the other sites!

Enjoy!
